In a world increasingly turning towards renewable energy, Zimbabwe and Zambia stand at a pivotal juncture.

Facing acute power shortages due to low water levels at Kariba Dam, these neighboring countries have a unique opportunity to transform their energy landscapes through solar power. This week, a high-stakes investment summit in Victoria Falls brought together key stakeholders to discuss the future of energy in the region.

The Zimbabwe-Zambia Energy Projects Summit, themed "Powering Zimbabwe and Zambia’s Sustainable Energy Future: Unlocking Opportunities in Renewables, Grid Modernisation and Energy Access," highlighted the immense potential of solar energy in addressing the current energy crisis.

The Current Energy Crisis

Zimbabwe and Zambia are grappling with severe electricity shortages, primarily due to the dwindling water levels at Kariba Dam, a critical source of hydroelectric power for both nations. This situation has underscored the urgent need for alternative energy sources to ensure a stable and sustainable power supply.

The Potential of Solar Energy

One of the summit's key messages was the untapped potential of solar energy in Zimbabwe and Zambia. Abdoulaye Sylla, head of corporate development and portfolio manager at EnergyNet Limited, emphasized the favorable sunlight conditions and vast land resources available for solar energy development in both countries. "Zimbabwe and Zambia enjoy high levels of solar insulation, making solar energy a prime resource," Sylla noted. With vast underutilized land in Zimbabwe and favorable sunlight conditions in Zambia's northern region, the potential for large-scale solar farms is significant.

Cross-Border Collaboration

The summit highlighted the importance of cross-border collaboration in harnessing solar energy. By working together, Zimbabwe and Zambia can create a blueprint for other African countries to follow. "What we are trying to promote is a cross-border collaboration between the two countries," Sylla said. "There is a massive opportunity for both countries, and we want them to exploit that as much as possible."

Strategic Positioning and Regional Energy Trade

Both Zimbabwe and Zambia are strategically positioned within the southern African energy grid, offering opportunities for regional energy trade. Zambia's interconnections with countries like South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Tanzania position it as a potential electricity exporter. Similarly, Zimbabwe can leverage regional energy trade to stabilize its energy supply through interconnections with neighboring countries. "Zimbabwe could leverage regional energy trade to stabilize its energy supply, especially through interconnection with neighboring countries," Sylla added.

Investment and Financing

The bi-annual conference, held in partnership with international finance institutions and the private sector, aimed to accelerate project financing and establish a clear risk mitigation framework for Zimbabwe and Zambia. The event convened key stakeholders, including ministries, utilities, regulators, energy organizations, international private sector stakeholders, institutional investors, private financiers, and service and technology providers from both countries. Discussions focused on creating an attractive energy investment destination and leveraging innovative, profitable renewable energy solutions to achieve universal access.
